Today’s “Picky Bastard” moment comes from last night’s episode of “Bones”, a show I love dearly, and hate to see making rookie flubs like this, so I regret bringing it up…but it has to be done.

In the episode agent Booth dips his tie into the gas tank of a suspect’s car to have a comparison done between the fuel in the tank with a sample of fuel that was used to burn a victim’s corpse.

The spike highlighted should only apear in one of the samples, not both.

In the comparison, it looks like everything matches up as it should if the samples where an exact match (as shown in the image above), but then it’s mentioned that the spike in the comparison is from orange juice that was spilled on Booth’s tie…if that was the case, the spike would ONLY be on one of the sample’s, and shouldn’t be shown in both images being compared. Tisk tisk…the squints should know better!

It’s official, Jack is back.

The 2 hour tv movie “24 - Redemption” played last night, and there was much rejoicing. “24″ has been on a bit of a break due in part to Kiefer Sutherland’s semi-recent legal trouble. Many (including myself) were hopeful that the return of “24″ would not suffer too much from the delay…and thankfully that seems to be the case.

I’m not a big fan of spoilers, so I’ll give the extremely condensed version of the events of the movie. Jack has been off the grid for a couple years (since the end of season 6) to avoid a warrent for his arrest, and eventually ended up in Africa, where he chills out a while, and ends up trying to save a bunch of kids from a warlord who kidnaps and trains kids to be soldiers for the war he’s fighting. And without going into much detail (or any really…watch it yourself, it’s worth it), he ends up arrested at the US embassy and shipped off the US…and that’s where the movie leaves us hanging, waiting for season 7 which starts on January 12th.

If you missed it on TV, that’s ok, because hulu has posted it…and I’ve embedded it at the top of this post for anyone who wants to watch it, and suggest you check it out if you’ve been following the show. If you haven’t been keeping up, it may be a little confusing at times, since “24″ isn’t known for filling in the back story for you, but well worth watching either way.

I eagerly await season 7…I may have to do a serious marathon at some point. It’s a good excuse to pull out all those dvd’s that are getting a bit dusty on the shelf.

I’ve greatly enjoyed the show this season, even if at times it was a bit over-the-top bizarre (though I suppose being a show about vampires and other such things, it can’t be helped). It’s been a roller coaster of twists and turns, with every episode ending with a surprise or some extra dramatic event just before the end credits roll…which I usually find pretty annoying (I’m looking at YOU “Heroes”), but somehow it works for the show. I think it’s because the surprises are a lot more internally consistent then a lot of other shows which do the same sort of thing with a “bait and switch” attitude, using a surprise twist at the end of an episode that changes something so drastically it doesn’t really make sense that it wasn’t obvious beforehand…

If you haven’t checked out “True Blood”, you really should, so long as you don’t mind some swearing and the occasional nudity mixed in with the blood and guts (it IS HBO after all). You can even already pre-order the season 1 dvd set

if you’re into that kinda thing (I just pre-ordered my copy)…or if you prefer the books and/or want a sneak peek at how the story may unfold for season 2 of the series, you can get the whole set of those as well.

Douglas Reynholm, testing to see if a gun is loaded...the hard way.

So The IT Crowd is finally back after a longer than usual break for it’s third season. I’ve loved the series since it started, probably at least in part due to my background in tech support at a call center, where the phrase “have you tried turning it off and on again?” was a staple of the daily routine, as it is in the show.

This season starts off with a bang (see above image) as Reynhom industries is in serious trouble from Douglas’s antics and abuse of shareholder funds. He ends up finding his grandfather’s old service pistol in a drawer in his office mere seconds after promising to not get into any trouble while waiting in the office for a meeting with a major shareholder, and ends up shooting himself in the leg.

Along with this there is also a story about Jen and a contractor working on her place that may or may not have been featured on “Builders From Hell” for pissing in sinks at other jobs, and Moss getting picked on by some bullies in a very “junior high” sorta way.

All in all it was a fun episode, but it didn’t have much to do with the geekiness of seasons past. Hopefully we’ll get more time in the basement with Roy, Moss, and Jen in future episodes, as I think that’s where the show really shines.

If you enjoy geek humour and/or britcoms, this show is for you…and if you’re a dvd collector like me, the first and second seasons are available, and well worth it. They are Region 2 DVD’s though…you’ve been warned.

The point is, TV Gawker is back in business, and the reviews, previews, and rants will be spreading like wildfire. Big changes are ahead, so are already happening behind the scenes, and some are going to be announced over the course of these week…including details about the future TV Gawker podcast, which will be recorded live each and every week. There’s even a nice big surprise in the works that will be announced on December first.

Now I’m off to watch some TV so I have something to yell and scream about, or rant and rave about…depending what it happens to be.

One of my favourite shows of the last few years is finally back for it’s fall season. Bones has returned for a forth season, and thankfully the premiere didn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth like the season 3 finale did (long story, maybe later).

And I have to apologize for the short posts lately, I’m gearing up for some serious posting in the very near future, but for now I thought I’d just spead a little anthropoligist, crime drama, comedy love. I Assure you, you don’t want to miss next week on TV Gawker, it’s gonna be an posting frenzy of epic porportion…and their will be ranting…oh yes…plenty of ranting. Well, it’s official. Laurence Fishburne is joining CSI next season when William Petersen (Gil Grissom on the show) leaves.

I really don’t know about this. I was a fan of CSI in it’s first few seasons, but it started getting so repetitive and unoriginal that I lost interest. Recently I’ve been getting back into it a bit, especially during season 7 with the season-long story arc of the miniture killer, as it brought back a lot of what I liked about the first few seasons. Having every episode be indipendent is great, but there’s something about longer story arcs that tend to keep my interest more.

As for Fishburne’s character, he’s playing a college lecturer that joins the Crime Lab as a level-1 CSI, specializing in criminal psychology, who is fighting with some inner demons as he notices aspects of his own personality fitting with the profile of a killer. It sounds interesting, and I’m sure he’s up for the task, acting-wise (I mean…he’s MORPHEUS, he can do anything…right?), I’m just not sure how well he’ll fit in with the rest of the cast, and the feel of the show.

I guess only time will tell. I’ll be looking out of the premiere of season 9, that’s for sure.

Coming to the Discovery channel in the fall, “Time Warp” is basically a show about a couple of MIT guys with a fancy (and admittedly, it’s pretty fancy) video camera that can take up to 20,000 frames of video per second, or to put it in layman’s terms….it can make EXTREMELY slow motion videos.

And that’s really the whole premise of the show. They take a few random things, like getting punched in the face, and they slow it WAY down to the point where it looks strange (and potentially cool). In the pilot episode they have a guy punched in the face, show what is happening to a wine glass as it shatters due to sound waves, show how a dog’s tongue works while it’s drinking, and do a couple of silly things with balloons just to show off how fast the camera is.

It was interesting I suppose, and maybe some of the future stuff will be cool to see, but it really didn’t grab me. They tried to keep things light with a bit of banter here and there (think “Mythbusters”), but failed miserably. That might be due to it being the pilot and they haven’t really found their groove yet, I don’t know, but it was a bit awkward from time to time…

Glass, bending and then shattering…really REALLY slowly.

All in all, if you want to see how strange things look when slowed down an insane degree, or enjoy things exploding, this may be a good show for you. There’s really not much else to it.
