There’s a new sitcom coming to the UK care of ITV2, called “No Heroics”. Essentially it’s a britcom about a few unknown superheroes and their relationships. Sounds a bit like the movie “Mystery Men” actually, with the main protagonists being unknown superheroes in a world full of people with super powers, and having their worst enemy be the most famous superhero in the world.

Here’s a preview to give you a little taste of what to expect.

Really not sure what to think at this point, it’s very strange…which could be good or bad. I’ll be sure to post a full review once it hits TV in a couple weeks, but until then, I just don’t know…

I hadn’t heard much about Sci-fi channel’s “Eureka” over the last couple years, and hadn’t seen an episode until this weekend when I caught the premiere of season 3. I was pleasantly surprised with some fun (and at times downright silly) sci-fi shenanigans.

Essentially the show is about a town populated by insanely smart people who constantly come up with crazy high-tech inventions. It’s a “drama”, but a serious leaning to the comedic, and is just plain entertaining if you don’t mind a fair amount of separation from reality (and most sci-fi fans don’t).

I highly suggest you check it out if you haven’t already. Hulu.com is getting better and better at carrying new episodes of things these days, and I’m happy to report that “Eureka” is there, and I’ll include the premiere of season 3 below for anyone that doesn’t want to make that extra click…I know it can be hard ;)

As you may already know from my review of the Middleman pilot episode, I found the show to be annoying, poorly written, and just pretty much bad all around. However, I’m a fair person (so people tell me…not sure where they get the idea), and so I have to give it a second chance.

I’ve caught up to the fifth (and most recent) episode now, and I will admit I’ve got to change my verdict….sorta.

Chased by a flying zombie fish…harsh.

After 5 episodes, the writing has gotten quite a bit better in some respects, and other aspects of the show have been growing on me. The subtitles during scene changes for example, are usually pretty funny. While the acting is still a bit bland, the characters are filling out nicely, except the Middleman, who is still pretty dull to watch (and being one of the stars of the show, that’s not good). I do greatly enjoy the artificially intelligent robot, Ida, with her crankiness and seeming to be bored with pretty much anything from watching TV to kill flying zombie fish…her dialog might just get me to watch another episode…maybe.

The plots have been varied, but seem to be getting stranger and stranger (and when you START with a hyper-intelligent ape with an obsession for mobster movies as the villian, that says something). I’m still not sure I like the style of the whole thing, but it seems pretty consistent at least, so if you enjoy one episode you will probably like the others.

Smart Car with jet rocket….check.

About the best thing I can say about the show now is that it doesn’t completely suck. It’s still a bit mind-numbingly corny at times, but it seems to be getting more and more successful at making the corniness work on a comedic level that the pilot just didn’t pull off…..so that’s progress.

Maybe I’m still recovering from the terrible “Do Not Disturb” pilot, and being a bit more lenient then I would otherwise be, but Middleman seems to be getting better…so I’ll be giving it another chance….for now.

Got a chance to see the pilot for “Do Not Disturb”, a sitcom coming to FOX in the fall, and starring Jerry O’Connell (of “Sliders” and “Crossing Jordan” fame). And I don’t think I can say this bluntly enough…..avoid this show at all costs. It’s written by a former writer for “Arrested Development”, and is directed by Jason Bateman (the guy that played Micheal Bluth on “Arrested Development”), so I expected something at least decent, since that show was as close to pure genius as TV has gotten in decades.

“I’m sorry, I can’t tell how old black people are.”

Sadly I was bombarded with a slue of horribly poor writing and stereotypical characters that lead me to believe that it’s actually attempting to insult the audience. You have the fat nice girl, the skinny bitch, the angry black chick, the stereotypical gay guy (which somehow comes off as the least offensive of the bunch)…and it just goes on and on. Every character seems to be constructed to be exactly the thing that will offend people the most. And of course that bleeds into the dialog, which is full of racist/insulting/idiotic jokes that go so far below the “lowest common denominator” typical of ‘dick and fart’ sitcoms that it HAS to be on purpose.

Keep reading if you want spoilers, but if you do stop reading now, do yourself a favour and skip this one when it hits your TV in September….TV this bad is hard to come by, and if you’ve read any of my past reviews, that should tell you something about just how bad this show is.
