If you’re never heard of Code Monkeys, you are not alone. It’s an animated comedy(of sorts…), on G4, about a group of very odd people working for a (thankfully) fictional Video game company. Calling the show chaotic would be an insult to Chaos theory, and the editing seems to have been done by someone who is taking it upon themselves to seek revenge on people with an attention span of more than 40 or 50 microseconds.
There are always numerous things happening on screen at once, with the top and bottom of the screen reserved for text based jokes and the center holding the actual animated show, which is in the style of old 8-bit video games…think Double Dragon for the NES and you’ll have the right idea.
Anyway, it’s returned for a second season, and I have to say, anyone who’s ever done acid wasted their money, as they could easily get the same effects from watching an episode of Code Monkeys. The writing on the show is actually pretty decent, but they try to cram so much extra humour into every corner of the screen at once that the writing is almost lost in the insanity of the moment.
If you like geek humour, this might be a show for you, but if you don’t have the ability to avoid blinking for the 22 minutes it runs, you’ll be missing a lot of the jokes. And its humour is not for everyone. For example, if you consider the term “cock-goblin” to be funny, you will enjoy the first episode of this season for at least a moment. If you enjoy the term so much that you wish someone would make a whole episode as an excuse to use the term 50 or more times in the span of 20 minutes, you just might be this show’s target audience. If, on the other hand, you find roasting marshmallows over corpses, public urination, blatent stereotypes, any form of toilet humour, or obscure computer or video game related humour to be offensive and/or annoying, avoid this show like the plague. Seriously, it WILL burn out some of your braincells. If you think of that as a selling point, power to you…good luck staying sane through the second commercial break.
Code Monkeys airs Sundays at 10pm EST, on G4
