The last few Saturday morning posts have been about classic cartoons, so this week instead of discussing one specific show, I thought I would check out whatever was actually on TV this morning on a specific channel. I flipped on the tube and FOX was on, running their Saturday Morning programming block they are currently calling “4Kids TV”, so that’s what I watched from 8:30am to 11:00am.

Here’s what I saw……

8:30 - 9:00 am, Viva Piñata

Viva Piñata is a show about an island of living Piñatas, who frolic and play and work hard at stuffing enough candy into themselves to get chosen to entertain children at parties by letting the kids beat them with a stick until they spill their sugary guts. It was pretty bad all around, but then, considering it is based on a video game it’s no surprise the story was so poorly written.

It also had a lot of references to eating candy helping the creatures on the island stay healthy… which is an interesting message to be sending into the minds of small children. I felt sorta creeped out watching supposedly living things prepare themselves to be brutally murdered by kids at a birthday party, and really don’t see the appeal of this show at all.

9:00 - 10:00 am, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

TMNT was a show I watched when I was younger, and I knew they were doing a new version these days, but I’ve only seen a couple episodes. It’s much darker than the original, and to be frank, a lot less entertaining. The animation style is interesting, and certainly more fluent thanks to advances in technology, but that’s about the only up side I can see.

They seem to be much more focused on the fighting, and less on the humour and story. They did try to make a couple jokes, but they fell flat with me…especially after repeating the same joke 3 times in a row, which was just annoying.

10:00 - 10:30 am, Sonic X

Sonic X seems to take it’s cues from the last 2 shows in that it’s not only based on an older Sonic cartoon, but that original cartoon was based on a video game. I really don’t know what to say about this one….it’s Sonic the Hedgehog, running around really fast…for 30 minutes. There was a vague story involving a couple of Sonic’s friends being held captive and Sonic saving them, but it all basically amounted to going really fast to avoid security, and then it was over.

10:30 am, Dinosaur King

This one is about a group of kids trying to collect cards that transform into dinosaurs and train them to fight each other. If it sounds vaguely like Pokemon, it’s because it’s a DIRECT ripoff. Even the characters look like the characters from Pokemon for fuck sake. I’m not a fan of the whole Pokemon thing, in fact I find the entire concept extremely annoying, but at least its creators tried to be somewhat original. Ripping off a show idea is bad enough….ripping off a stupid show idea that’s been done to death already is just idiotic.

Conclusion

So the lineup consisted of a show based on a video game, a remake of an old show, a remake of an old show based on a video game, and a complete ripoff of a show that’s been ripped off too many times to count. Is it just me, or does FOX’s Saturday morning cartoon lineup have a distinct lack of originally? Oh, and I didn’t stick around to watch the next show, which was “Kirby: Right Back At Ya!”….I though one remake of a show that was based on a video game was enough for one morning…

Are there any good, original Saturday morning cartoons playing these days? If you know of one I should check out, please drop it in the comments, it would be greatly apreciated.

Captain N: The Game MasterCaptain N: The Game Master” was a cartoon played on NBC in the late 80’s to early 90’s about a kid that gets sucked into the video game world known as ‘Videoland’…..really it was just Nintendo games, since it was basically a 30 minute commercial for Nintendo..but still).

It was full of enemies and allies for the kid, Kevin, that were all based on whatever Nintendo games were just released or about to be released… Zelda and Link, Donkey Kong, etc. etc. Most of the locations were also pulled from games such as Metroid, the Mario games, etc.

It was an adventure show at it’s core, but had a fair bit of humour injected in due to Kevin’s use of a classic NES controller to affect the reality of ‘Videoland’, via pausing things and an assortment of other strange abilities, and his use of a Nintendo Zapper (think Duck Hunt) as his main weapon against whatever bad guys he faced.

At the time it was playing, I was really big into the NES (I was 7 when it started airing…), so all the game references and familiar characters were fun to watch, and it of course convinced me on more than one occasion to plead with my parents to get me a certain game or toy that I had seen on the show or the commercials (mostly about video games, action figures, and other such things.

The nostalgia factor is high with this one, but the stories were actually pretty damn bad. Watching an episode now is fun, but it’s fun in that “Oh man, I can’t believe I used to be entertained by this,” sorta way. This is the first cartoon in my Saturday morning series that doesn’t seem to have held up against the test of time for me. But there’s always other ways to fill that desire for nostalgia, like a classic NES belt buckle just like Captain N had…… if you don’t mind the strange look you’ll get.

Continuing the tradition (well technically it was just one post last week, but it’ll be tradition soon enough!) of Saturday being a day far cartoons, I thought I’d discuss probably one of the silliest cartoons of the mid 90’s: “Pinky and the Brain“.

The show is about 2 mice who plot to rule the world each night. One of them being a genius, and the other being completely bat-shit insane. Every episode Brain thinks up a way to try to take over the world, and every episode they fail in miserable and hilarious ways. They get pretty damn close now and then, but world domination stays JUST out of their grasp.

It started as a series of short segments on “Animaniacs”, so you KNOW it’s a little bit “out there”, so to speak. It really is bizarre, but somehow it all works very nicely in the context of the show and becomes something much more than you might expect from such a weird premise.

I really enjoyed the show when it was on the air. It is extremely silly, for example in one episode the mice successfully build a full sized replica of Earth out of paper mache and then lure everyone onto it with free t-shirts and try to keep the original Earth for themselves…only to have it blown up by a meteor strike and end up saving everyone (being on the fake Earth at the time, now fully populated and used as the real Earth. Beyond it’s silliness though, is a subtle layer of parody and wit that really hits the spot, Even now going back and watching some, I can’t help but laugh out loud through the whole thing.

If you like silliness, or would like to understand what it would be like to live with a mouse that has completely lost its mind (and who wouldn’t?), then I highly recommend checking out “Pinky and the Brain”. All three seasons are out on DVD…and I’m sure if you looked hard enough you could find some online too.

‘ll leave you with the shows most famous quote…

Pinky:
Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?

The Brain:
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world.

Got a favourite Saturday morning cartoon? Let me know what it is in the comments, and if I talk about it in a future post I’ll be sure to spread some props and link-love. Cartoons and social networking, what could be better?

Anyone who read my rundown of the new shows on FOX in the fall already know I’m not a fan of “Family Guy” or “American Dad”, and now they’re bringing out a spin off of “Family Guy” based on Cleveland and his family called, originally enough, “The Cleveland Show”. Check out this promo if you want to see what it’s all about. Personally this show strikes me as a very very bad idea…but then, FOX has been chalk full of those lately, so it’s not that surprising.

What ya think? Good? Bad? Run away screaming in horror for the state of television comedy? I’ll give it as fair a chance as I can muster up when the time comes, but I have a feeling I’m going to be wasting my time…

I got my grubby little hands on a copy of the new Futurama direct-to-dvd movie, “Futurama:The Beast With a Billion Backs” that’s set to come out on the 24th, and thought I’d give everyone a heads up of just what I think about it…cause I know how much you care…..oh, and ’cause you want some spoilers probably…..it shall be done!

Anyway, being a HUGE fan of Futurama when it was originally on TV, and enjoying the first direct-to-dvd offering they gave us(though the best part was the hypnotoad episode bonus feature), I couldn’t wait to see this in the hopes that it would bring back some of the magic of the series that had been lost in the first movie. Sadly that didn’t happen.

What I got was a haphazard collection of in jokes and schizophrenic story lines resulting in me going into a fit of rage that could only be soothed by a quick trip through memory lane via my Futurama Season 3 DVD set (the best season in my opinion). It was bad. It wasn’t terrible, but in comparison to the television series it was pretty much a waste of time. There were some good jokes sprinkled around, but generally it was pretty disappointing.

The movie does have it’s moments, and the trademark Futurama humour is definitely there, but something is missing from the equation, and I think that something is “sanity”. The jokes were often funny, but the main story was too strange and forced to overcome itself. This is not the Futurama I know and love, this is something new…..and in this case, that’s not a good thing.

If you want the full scoop and a pile of spoilers, keep on reading, otherwise stop now and go watch “Everybody Love Hypnotoad from the “Futurama: Bender’s Big Score” dvd extras. Read the rest of this entry »
